Drakensang Online review: an action MMORPG that needs a client

Bigpoint's free-to-play action MMORPG, set in the burning world of Dracania. Note before you set out: this one is a download, not a browser tab.

What it is

Drakensang Online, often shortened to DSO, is a free-to-play action MMORPG from Bigpoint. The setting is Dracania, which the official site sums up as "a world in flames", with dangers that run from the Grimmagstone Caves to the Nefertari cult's Prison of Souls.

We include it on this road as an honest exception: it is not something you open in a browser tab. The official site's main buttons are "Play now" and "Download", its own listing names Windows and macOS as operating systems, Bigpoint files it under its desktop games, and there is a Windows listing on Steam. Plan for an installation, and check the official site's requirements before you start if your computer is older.

How a session goes

Four heroes are on offer. The Dragonknight is the destructive close-combat warrior, driven by the fury of a dragon legacy. The Ranger is an archer who weakens enemies from afar with mystic attacks and finishes them up close with blade bows. The Spellweaver uses mana to command fire, ice and lightning and strike down entire hordes. The Steam Mechanicus is the inventor of the four, with heavy firepower and rocket packs.

Choosing a hero is the main early decision, and the official descriptions make the split clear: two of the four fight at close range, one controls the field with elemental magic, and the Ranger moves from distance to close combat. If you already know whether you prefer to stand in the middle of a fight or work from its edges, the choice is quick.

Beyond adventuring across Dracania, the official game info describes PvP in two forms — duels and group battles — with top-ranked fighters earning prestige. The game has grown through expansions, and two are named on the site: Sands of Malice and Rise of Balor.

The news page in autumn 2026 shows a lively calendar: an anniversary festival, a returning-player event and the return of Dragan's Black Knights with a new jewel. It is clearly a game that is still being looked after.

The time it asks for

An action MMORPG is hands-on: you steer your hero directly, so the time the game takes is the time you spend in front of it. There is little that moves forward while you are away.

Installing a client changes the habit, too. This is a game you sit down for, not one that waits quietly in a spare tab. The steady stream of events rewards players who return regularly.

How it is paid for

Drakensang Online is free to start. The official news mentions a Season Pass, and the site footer carries a "Cancel Subscription" link, which tells you recurring paid options exist as well. Free to start, with optional in-game purchases.

Who should take this road

Take it if you are…

  • after real-time action and happy to install a client;
  • a fan of class-driven builds and dark fantasy;
  • a PvP player who enjoys duels and group battles.

Skip it if you are…

  • on a machine where you cannot install programs — this is a download;
  • short on time and after quick sessions;
  • put off by passes and event-driven offers.

Pack list

Worth carrying

  • Four heroes with clearly different styles.
  • Real-time action rather than menus.
  • PvP in both duels and group battles.
  • Ongoing events and expansions.

Extra weight

  • Not a browser game — needs a client.
  • Hands-on play asks for undivided attention.
  • Season Pass and recurring options add a layer of offers.
