Hordes.io review: a faction MMORPG that opens in a browser tab

An online RPG that opens straight in a browser tab: two factions, four classes, parties and faction war — plus an optional paid perk called Elixir.

What it is

Hordes.io is an online role-playing game you play at hordes.io, in the browser, with nothing to install. The official tagline sums it up: roam the lands in gigantic battlegroups, level up with your party, trade rare items and upgrade your gear.

When you create a character you choose a side. The Vanguard "seeks tradition, structure and order" and keeps its castle in a lush green area around Guardstone. The Bloodlust "values freedom and loyalty" and holds its defences in a desert realm called Headless Landing. Then you pick one of four classes.

How a session goes

The four classes cover the classic group roles. The Warrior is built to hold monsters with high defence, shields and defensive buffs. The Mage deals heavy area damage and slows targets with ice magic. The Archer brings high single-target and burst damage and, in the game's words, "will always keep their distance". The Shaman supports the group by healing the tank and adding buffs or crippling debuffs.

The party menu is a good map of what players actually do together. On the PvE side it lists levelling, farming and boss fights; on the PvP side, Obelisk, Arena and War. Parties can be built with invitation links, members can offer to summon each other to their location, and group activities have a queue.

Clans give you a longer-term home. The economy runs through a merchant with player auctions and a personal stash. PvP has a progression of its own: fame, weekly brackets and prestige ranks, all shown in a dedicated PvP menu.

The time it asks for

Hordes.io is a show-up-and-play game, not a timer game. Group content and faction war happen live, with other people, so the time it asks is simply the length of your sessions. That is good news if you like a clear stopping point, and less good if you hoped to make progress in two-minute bursts.

Weekly PvP brackets reward regular attendance, and party play works best when you can commit to finishing what the group started.

How it is paid for

Hordes.io is free to play in the browser. The optional purchase is Elixir, a time-limited perk (the game offers it by the month or by the year) paid for with Hordes Points. The game describes it as "a magical blue elixir potion which grants your account useful extra features". The listed perks are practical: more bag space, more stash storage, a higher merchant limit and duration, a chat supporter icon and no ads. Elixir can also be sent to another player as a gift.

Who should take this road

Take it if you are…

  • after real group roles — tank, healer, damage — without installing anything;
  • a PvP player who likes faction war and weekly ladders;
  • someone with a free evening and friends to play with.

Skip it if you are…

  • hoping to progress in very short breaks;
  • a strictly solo player — much of the content is built for parties;
  • looking for a long scripted story.

Pack list

Worth carrying

  • Opens in a browser tab with nothing to install.
  • Four clearly defined classes covering tank, healing and damage.
  • PvE and PvP activities organised right in the party menu.
  • The optional perk is practical rather than story content.

Extra weight

  • Most rewarding with a group, less so alone.
  • Free players see ads; removing them is part of the paid perk.
  • Progress needs live sessions rather than quick check-ins.
